FAQs About Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Combining Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms include a smoke photoelectric sensor and an electrochemical CO gas sensor. The combo alarms use independent algorithms to process smoke and gas risks. Each sensing module operates independently with dedicated algorithms. When either smoke or CO concentration reaches its threshold, the alarm triggers audible and visual alerts.

CFS offers standalone, wireless interlinked, and Wi-Fi combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in rental properties.

Combo alarms consist of two independent detection circuits:

Smoke circuit work principle

The Photoelectric smoke circuits use an infrared LED (IRED) and an infrared photosensitive LED in chamber. The IRED and photosensitive LED are offset at an angle.  When the alarm is operating normally and the surrounding air is smoke-free, the IRED light cannot reach the photosensitive LED during smoke detection. When large smoke enters the smoke chamber, the alarm emits an audible alarm.

Carbon Monoxide circuit work principle

The sensor circuit involves connecting a 10k ohm resistor in parallel with the CO sensor. When the sensor outputs current, it produces a negative voltage relative to ground, which is then applied to the backend voltage comparator amplifier for comparison and amplification.

When the CO alarm detects CO gas, the CO sensor generates a current of 1.0nA to 2.5nA/PPM and increases the Vout output. When Vout reaches the voltage of the alarm threshold, the CO alarm enters alarm mode.

Intermittent beeping is usually not a fire alarm, but rather a status indicator or fault signal. Continuous and rapid beeping indicates danger and a potential fire. Common causes of beeping include:

  • Low battery
  • End of life
  • CO sensor malfunction or aging
  • Node disconnection or synchronization error

Kidde/First Alert are global brands with advantages in channel coverage and end-user recognition, but they don’t support OEM :

  • limited or no customization
  • High-cost structure (brand premium + channel costs)
  • Slow feature upgrade cycle

ODM/OEM manufacturer CFS can customize according to customer requirements:

  • Certification support (UL / EN / AS)
  • Photoelectric + electrochemical sensor integration
  • PCB and hardware customization
  • Firmware and detection algorithm development
  • CO gas calibration and testing

Wired smoke and carbon monoxide alarms use 120V/230V (AC) mains power as the primary power source and a backup battery to ensure continued operation in the event of a power outage. It achieves synchronized alarms for multiple devices via an interconnected signal line. Its advantages include:

  • Strong anti-interference capability due to physical wiring communication;
  • A reliable system linkage suitable for multi-room, multi-floor applications;
  • No need for frequent battery replacements;
  • Compliance with building codes;

It is used in new residential projects (mandatory linkage installation), apartments and rental properties, commercial buildings such as hotels and schools, and projects integrated with fire control systems.

Learn more:

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are sold to North American households and bulk purchasers through Costco or Home Depot. These combination units (Combos) detect both smoke and carbon monoxide and can be interconnected or operate independently at battery and AC power. If you want a simple installation without wiring, battery-powered units are a good selection, but AC-powered units need professional installation. CFS focuses on UL217 and EN14604 certification compliance, batch-to-batch consistency, and after-sales support performance to ensure that the products effectively meet the demands of channel sales and user experience.
