Unmanned telecommunications tower Project
Introductions

This project installs a comprehensive fire safety early warning system for two Unmanned telecommunications towers in UK. They are in remote suburbs, mountainous areas, and even restricted zones. The equipment is usually run in unattended sites and for 24 hours for 7 days of uninterrupted operation and is in high temperatures. The dust and CO easily accumulate, and UPS/battery systems operate at high temperatures. There are communication disruptions or even larger safety incidents due to a fire or the accumulation of toxic gases.

Referring to the tower functional layout and operational requirements, product types, and technical characteristics, the project is comprehensively designed and planned the fire detection and alarm system with EN14604 &EN50291 fire safety regulations for this Unmanned telecommunications tower. The system uses 20pcs alarms (smoke alarms, heat alarms, CO alarms) and controllers. It enables early fire warnings, lower false alarms, easy maintenance, and emergency response in the initial fire or carbon monoxide leak stage and simultaneously sends the information to tower management by WIFI and message.

😔 Challenges

  • Multiple Interference Factors: The alarms’ signal and WIFI signal may be interfered by dust, vibration, and electromagnetic interference. It is necessary to optimize false alarm and anti-interference design.
  • High performance for Networking and Remote Management: Maintenance personnel need to receive real-time remote signals of smoke or CO abnormal notifications.
  • Temperature and CO Signal judgement: Using a multi-parameter (including equipment overheating, rising ambient temperature, or early signs of fire and originating from fuel generator exhaust or chemical reactions) fusion judgment algorithm to avoid false alarms.

☺️ Solutions

  • Differentiated detection technology Combination together: Smoke and CO alarms combination and smoke and heat alarms combination are used to avoid the limitations of a single detection technology.
Smoke and CO alarms combination are used to avoid the limitations of a single detection technology solving all problems.
  • WIFI Connectivity and Remote Monitoring TUYA: The real-time alarm information upload notifications by WIFI to TUYA app, and TUYA can monitor alarms health status and remote debug alarms.
  • Training and Remote Maintenance Planning: Provide training on equipment use and weekly maintenance, including monthly inspections, data comparison and analysis, and signal testing.

How Many Alarms

Explore how different areas are equipped with the appropriate types and number of alarms, ensuring effective fire safety across various environments.

Smoke Alarms

Following EN 54 standard (applicable to Europe): The coverage area and detector spacing for each detector are standardized.
Equipment cabinet + UPS/Battery cabinet + Power distribution + Supply area

  • 1pcs smoke detectors for equipment cabinet
  • 2pcs smoke detectors for UPS/Battery cabinet
  • 1pcs smoke detectors for Power distribution and supply area
This project used total 4 pcs smoke detectors, the details are as follows:
  • 2pcs SM17W WiFi Photoelectric Smoke Detector
  • 2pcs CS11W Wi-Fi 2-in-1 Smoke & CO Combo Detector.

Heat Alarms

UPS/battery room + Generator room + Cabinet passageway

The project used total 3 pcs heat alarms, the details are as follows:
  • 3pcs SM11HR Interlinked 2-in -1 smoke and heat combination detector.
  • Heat alarms are installed in visible fire areas where smoke may easily cause false alarms.
  • Normally 1pcs heat alarms per room.
CO

CO Alarms

Generator power area + Battery room + No ventilation zones

The project used total 3 pcs heat alarms, the details are as follows:
  • 3pcs CS11W Wi-Fi 2-in-1 Smoke & CO Combo Detector
  • At least 1pcs CO detector per room
  • With horizontal distribution across multiple floors

Choose The Right Alarms For Unmanned Telecommunications Tower

Based on the telecommunications tower’s spatial type and risk characteristics, the project will achieve fire (smoke/temperature rise) detection in all critical areas within the tower and CO detection and early warning in areas where carbon monoxide leaks may occur (such as batteries rooms and enclosed spaces), so the project used three type alarms:

Smoke Alarms

Photoelectric smoke alarms use an infrared LED (IRED) and a photosensitive LED in a chamber; smoke scatters the IRED light, generating a signal that triggers the alarm. They are highly sensitive to slow-smoldering fires that produce dense smoke and carbon monoxide, providing 10–15 minutes of early warning for residential and public buildings.

The system should cover densely populated tower areas, such as main equipment cabinets, UPS/battery boxes, and power distribution areas. The project used the SM17W WiFi Photoelectric Smoke Detector and CS11W Wi-Fi 2-in-1 Smoke & CO Combo Detector system.

Heat Alarms

Heat alarms detect rapid temperature rises or high ambient temperatures, triggering an immediate alarm. They are suitable for areas with minimal smoke and fast heat increases, such as UPS and battery storage areas, generator areas, and transformer enclosures.

To reduce device and wiring requirements, the project used the SM11HR Interlinked 2-in-1 Smoke and Heat Combination Detector.

CO Alarms

Carbon monoxide, the “silent killer,” is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-irritating toxic gas that easily accumulates in areas with incomplete combustion and poor ventilation. Reliable CO detectors must be installed in batteries rooms and enclosed spaces and areas containing gas-burning equipment, also help protect the residents from CO poisoning.

To reduce the number of separate devices and wires numbers in this project, using CS11W Wi-Fi 2-in-1 Smoke & CO Combo Detector system.

Project Summary

The Unmanned telecommunications tower alarm system operated stably with no false alarms or complaints for 1 year and passed monthly routine security checking. Our system not only reduced the risk of fire and equipment damage, but also providing strong support for the safety of unattended communication facilities.

When you start a new public project such as unmanned Remote sites, you must consider system false alarm controlling and use WIFI smoke + heat + CO combo alarms, choose a factory-type supplier that understands both the product and installation and customization capabilities.
