Opera House Project
Introductions

This project installs a comprehensive fire safety early warning system for an opera house in Sydney. There are 498 seats in the auditorium, a spacious lobby, and main access corridors. As a public cultural facility in Sydney, we welcome audiences of all ages to the opera house. The public spaces and screening rooms are designed for comfort without compromising user experience. There is a typical high-risk commercial service establishment for its diverse functional spaces and high volume of people.

Referring to the building’s functional layout and operational requirements and product types and technical characteristics, the project is comprehensively designed and planned the fire detection and alarm system with AS 3786 / AS 1670.1 fire safety regulation for this opera house. The system uses 41pcs alarms (smoke alarms, heat alarms, CO alarms) and controllers. It enables early fire warnings, lower false alarms, timely evacuation, easy maintenance and emergency response in the initial fire or carbon monoxide leak stage and simultaneously gives the information to opera house management and audiences.

😔 Challenges

  • Dense crowds and zero false alarms: There are air conditioning recirculation, smoke sprayers (for special effects), and low-light conditions in the opera houses, which can potentially trigger smoke alarms.
  • Differences in Functional Spaces: Various people go to different functional spaces, such as the ticket area, rest area, popcorn kitchen in the same air ventilation system, and may make false alarms or missed alarms.
  • Equipment Concealment: Alarms must not detract from the overall opera house aesthetic, and the alarm lights and buzzers must meet the standards while minimizing disruption to watching movies.
  • Large space and a high ceiling: Following normal installing method, the smoke sensitivity will be lower in large space and a high ceiling.

☺️ Solutions

  • Differentiated detection technology Combination together: Different types of detectors are used in different areas: Photoelectric smoke detectors are used in reading and book storage areas.
  • False Alarm Resistance Design Logic: The engineers optimize MCU multi-parameter alarm signal and algorithm to filter environmental noise and photo sensor sensitivity to reduce false alarm.
  • Double Verification of Installation and Commissioning: Each Alarm installing location on ceilings or high walls and avoiding near ventilation openings, air conditioning vents, should have the cross-verification for installation height, airflow impact, and measured response time.
  • Aesthetics and Functionality together: The alarms use concealing wiring and wireless connectivity and is installed in a not easily noticeable location, but the function is not affected. Adjusting LED brightness and sound without disrupting the viewing experience meets the standard.
  • Increase the number of alarms: Reducing standard installation spacing and increasing the number of alarms can avoid missing alarms.

Choose The Right Alarms For Opera House

Based on the opera house’s spatial type and risk characteristics, the project will achieve fire (smoke/temperature rise) detection in all critical areas within the opera house and CO detection and early warning in areas where carbon monoxide leaks may occur (such as boiler rooms and machine rooms), so the project used three type alarms:

Smoke Alarms

Photoelectric smoke alarms use an infrared LED (IRED) and a photosensitive LED in a chamber; smoke scatters the IRED light, generating a signal that triggers the alarm. They are highly sensitive to slow-smoldering fires that produce dense smoke and carbon monoxide, providing 10–15 minutes of early warning for residential and public buildings.

The system should cover densely populated opera house areas, such as ceilings and entrances, corridors and rest areas, ticketing and entrance areas, snack areas, and storage rooms. The project used the CS13R Wireless Interconnected Smoke Alarms system.

Heat Alarms

Heat alarms detect rapid temperature rises or high ambient temperatures, triggering an immediate alarm. They are suitable for areas with minimal smoke and fast heat increases, such as popcorn and ice cream production areas, computer and control rooms, electrical and lighting equipment rooms, and areas with steam, dust, or smoke.

To reduce device and wiring requirements, the project used the Wireless Interlinked Heat Detector HD11R.

CO Alarms

Carbon monoxide, the “silent killer,” is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-irritating toxic gas that easily accumulates in areas with incomplete combustion and poor ventilation. Reliable CO detectors must be installed in underground parking, opera house boiler rooms, backup power room and areas containing gas-burning equipment, also help protect the residents from CO poisoning.

To reduce the number of separate devices and wires numbers in this project, using Tuya WiFi 2-in-1 Smoke & CO Combo Detector CS14W.

AT THE END

Project Summary

The Austria opera house alarm system operated stably with no false alarms or complaints for 2.8 years and passed monthly routine security checking. Our system not only improved overall safety without impacting the audiences experience but also meeting public cultural buildings core:

When you start a new public project such as libraries, opera houses, theaters, exhibition halls and museums, you must consider system false alarm controlling and use combo alarms, choose a factory-type supplier that understands both the product and installation and customization capabilities.
