What is Sensor,Detector and Alarm?

These three components form a progressive core in a security system, progressing from “signal acquisition” to “risk identification” and then to “risk identification plus warning feedback.” Sensors sense physical signals, detectors integrate sensing and risk identification, and alarms combine detectors with warning signals(such as sound and light or linked warnings).

Sensor

A sensor is a device that converts measured non-electrical signals (such as temperature, pressure, or gas concentration) into transmittable and processable electrical signals (such as voltage, current, and resistance) or digital signals according to a certain rule. It acts as the “sensory organ” of various monitoring systems, responsible only for signal acquisition and conversion, and does not possess risk assessment or warning functions.

Just “feels” the world—like eyes seeing light or skin sensing heat—but doesn’t think at all.

Detector

This detection unit, centered on a sensor and integrating signal processing, analysis, and threshold comparison, receives raw sensor signals and uses a built-in algorithm to determine whether the signal exceeds a “risk threshold.” It only outputs a warning trigger signal when the signal exceeds the preset threshold. It typically only has simple indicators (such as indicator lights) and does not include strong warning functions (such as audible alarms). It usually requires a detector with a control panel or smart app.

  • Smoke detector = smoke sensor + signal processing circuit + threshold judgment module.
  • Carbon monoxide detector = carbon monoxide sensor + filtering circuit + concentration judgment module.
  • Heat detector = heat sensor + judgment module.

Alarm

This device integrates a detector and an audible/luminous warning unit. Its working principle is as follows: receiving a trigger signal from the detector, it issues a clear warning message through sound, light, vibration, voice, or linked actions to remind nearby personnel to take appropriate measures.

What is the definition of Sensor, Detector and Alarm in UL and EU?

  • The component or combination of components of the alarm that responds to and in turnprovides a usable output signal in the presence of carbon monoxide. (UL2034)

Apparatus/Detector

A device that detects an abnormal high temperature or rate of temperature rise.(UL217)

ALARM, SINGLE STATION

An alarm device consisting of an assembly of electrical and mechanical components including a sensor or sensors, an audible alarm, and an optional visual alarm constructed to detect the presence of carbon monoxide gas. It is powered either from an external source by means of splice leads or a cord and plug arrangement or from an integral battery or batteries. It may have terminals for connection to a remote audible signaling appliance or accessory. It may also contain an integral transmitter for energizing a remote audible signaling appliance. (ul2034)

MULTI-CRITERIA SMOKE ALARM

An alarm comprised of a smoke sensor plus one or more additional sensors such as heat, radiant energy, fire gases or smoke that operates on different principles. Each sensor in the set is separately monitored for the presence or absence of physical stimuli. The individual signal from each sensor is mathematically evaluated together with the signals from the other sensor(s) to determine when a smoke alarm signal is warranted. Aside from this smoke alarm signal, the smoke alarm may generate other independent alarm signals such as but not limited to a CO alarm, heat alarm, or a flame alarm for which each alarm type complies with the applicable standard. HEAT ALARM, SINGLE STATION

A self-contained fire alarm system comprising of a heat alarm, an alarm sounding device, and a stored energy source (wound spring) incorporated in one integral package.(UL217)
